Rathangan U17s Soccer vs Portlaoise C.B.S
The game started with Rathangan applying pressure and forcing the Portlaoise team to make mistakes early. This led to multiple scoring chances from set pieces and crosses. The first goal of the game came early in the first half with a Rathangan corner falling to a Portlaoise defender who was then tackled by Donal Kenny who took the ball and chipped the keeper from 8 yards out. Portlaoise took this as a wake up call and immediately raise their level of intensity, within minutes of the Rathangan goal, Portlaoise pulled it back with a goal of their own also coming from a corner. Portlaoise continued their pressure but a strong performance from Rathangan keeper D.J Earley kept them out. The first half ended 1-1
The second half started with a bit of skill from Rathangans Ryan Webb who produced a magical double nutmeg on the Portlaoise midfielders. The conditions became very bad throughout the second half with high speed winds and a few showers impacting the style of play in the game. The game got more physical as it went on with hard tackles coming from both teams but the strong will of the Rathangan lads wouldn’t let them be pushed around. As the second half was coming to a close, Josh Maher and Conor Boyle came on in a last ditch attempt to get a late winner unfortunately this never came and the game headed to extra time.
The first half of extra time was quite even with both teams getting their fair share of goal chances. This half saw very sloppy football from both sides due to the extreme conditions on the day.
The second half of extra time saw Rathangan dominate the game on all parts of the pitch, this led to many goal chances but unfortunately they couldn’t convert.
