Rathangan TY students enjoy an exciting Expo.
David Vaughan- Ty2
On Monday the 12th of September TY students from Ardscoil Rath Iomghain attended the Ty EXPO at Punchestown race course, Naas. It was an opportunity for TY students, teachers and parent’s to come face- to- face with the people behind the many opportunities available to them in this unique educational year.
The students had an opportunity to learn about different activities and courses that could be incorporated into theirTransition year programme. Every student, along with our co-ordinator Ms Ashe, found many stalls that generated interest. One stall TY’s from our school were particularly interested in was the personal safety courses. The instructor ,who had twenty years experience in the London riot police, showed us some sample moves on how to protect our selves in a confrontation. The TY’s were amazed at his skills and really appreciated the opportunity to get involved.
There were also a number of engaging speakers on the day talking about different topics rangingfrom mental health to college courses after secondary school. One very inspirational talk was delivered by Jamie Harrington from 'Teen line'. He talked about mental health among young people and gave us some tips and advice on what to do if you're not feeling ok or are having a bad day. He encouraged us to speak out and to help others speak out and get help. It was a very educating and positive experience.
Overall the Tys had a great day and have gained valuable insight into so many different opportunities available to us.
