This week is Positive Mental Health week in Ard Scoil Rath Iomghain:
Over the next 5 days, each morning we will tell you a little bit about Ard Scoil Rath Iomghain’s5 steps to Positive Mental Health. The good news is that all of these steps are things you can do for yourself, you can improve your Mental Health if you work on these 5 steps.
Transition year students have organised this week and will have an action day on Wednesday. Tomorrow we are having a non uniform day to raise much needed funds for organisations like Pieta house and Kildare mental health services who help young people who are experiencing difficulty with their mental health. Also this week we would like everyone to have an ARK week, we want everyone to do an Act of Random Kindness for someone else in the school. It can be as simple as a compliment, saying something nice about someone behind their back, listen to someones problem without comparing it to your own, say thank you, smile at everyone you meet. and remember “no act however small, is ever wasted”
The first step is MY BODY IS A TEMPLE
Its common knowledge that regular exercise is good for your body but it’s also one of the best ways to improve your mental health. Research shows that even a small amount of exercise can help you feel better. It is recommended that you should get at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday. Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness and euphoria.
Your diet also has an effect on your mental health. Recent studies have shown that the risk of depression increases about 80% in teenagers who eat a low quality diet. Our bodies need a balance of nutrients and enzymes. When we don’t receive enough nutrients or we have too much of the wrong kind of nutrients, the body and mind cannot function properly.
So remember that exercise and a healthy diet strengthens the body and relaxes the mind.
Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.
Your body is a temple, but only if you treat it as one.
