North Leinster Champs!
On Friday 26th of February, our u16 boy’s team travelled to Dunganny to fight for the title of North Leinster Champions against O’Carolan College, Nobber. Nerves were high on the journey and in the dressing rooms prior the game knowing that this would be a tough match. The game started with two points from Nobber, both scored by Jordan Morris. Nobber’s Saran O’Fionnagain was a tough opponent for our centre-back Desmond-James Earley but DJ welcomed the challenge. Rathangan’s first opportunity of the game came 10 minutes in after a great play from Reece Cuddihy that set Oisin O’Loughlin up for the first goal of the game. That kick started the Rathangan lads who fought until the half time whistle, they scored another 2 points unanswered and managed to go in all square at half time with a score of 1-2to 0-5.
Second half started with great defending from the Rathangan backs to force wide from Nobber and keep them scoreless.
A free was brought up for Rathangan and Reece Cuddihy scored a point off a quick free kick. Nobber finally scored in the second half with two points.A superb solo goal by hard working midfielder Eddie Bennet set Rathangan on their way. This was quickly followed by an Eoghan Geoghan point. Nobber were then awarded a penalty which they converted to bring the score to 2-4 to 1-7. Further frees from Jack McEvoy and Cian Sheridan of Nobber to level the game the late on. Rathangan scored a goal late on through Chillie Donnelly which could have won the game but unfortunately it was disallowed.
The game finished 2-5 to 1-8. Extra time was thenneeded.Tension on the sideline and the pitch was high and the passion for the game was displayed. The winning of the game was the swapping of Jack McEvoy to full forward and Tiegan Kenny to Midfield.
Jack scored a point in each half of extra time to cancel out Nobber’s three. A goal from a tight angle from Rob Walsh finished Nobber off. It was a tense finish that left everyone on the edge but Rathanganfinished with a final point to win the game 3-8 to 1-11.
