Ardscoil Rath Iomgháin defeated a superb Presentation Waterford team today in the regional finals in St.Mary's Hall, Portlaoise.
Ardscoil Rath Iomgháin were behind after Waterford scored off the jump, but quickly levelled the scoring with a well worked basket finished by Claire Melia. Ardscoil Rath Iomgháin's defense was excellent and the girls fought hard to limit the outside shooting. Presentation Waterford shot on sight from outside the three point line and were accurate from every angle. The Rathangan girls persisted however and their willingness to put their bodies on the line and fight for every ball proved the difference.
Shauna Quirke (5th year), Shannon Scully (3rd year), Aine Nash (6th year) and Laura Dempsey (5th year) worked tirelessly to run the shooters down while Claire Melia (5th year), Sophie McEvoy (3rd year) and Emma Doolan (TY) commanded under the boards.
On the offensive end of the floor, Claire Melia was immense once again for Ardscoil. She was unstoppable when she drove to the basket and was on the free throw line on 13 occasions in the game. Claire is one of the best players in her age group in the country and the way she got her teammates involved in the game, was a credit to her. She finished the game with an unbelievable 43 points. Aine Nash picked up 8 points and Laura Dempsey, Emma Doolan and Shauna Quirke also added to their teams tally. The game finished 57 points to 43. It was an excellent all round performance and the girls will compete in the All-Ireland quarter finals at 'Senior A level' for the fourth year running, on February 6th, 2017. Thank you to Ms Ashe and Ms Mc Donald for all their hard work and dedication with the team.
