Green schools week is taking place in Ard scoil Rathangan from the 21st to the 25th of November. This is the second of the two year programme that focuses on litter and waste management. We are hoping to be awarded our first Green flag on this topic in May. Over the past year we have introduced the two bin system in our school. This is where we designate grey bins for general waste and white bins for recycling. We have introduced composing bins in the home economic kitchens, the canteen, Emma’s kitchen and the staff room. We replaced our bin liners with biodegradable versions; red bin liners in the general waste and green bin liners in the white and cream in the organic composting bins.
This year from the 21st to the 25th of November the school will host a Green awareness week. During this week we intent to highlight the issues that the green schools are trying to tackle. Members of the green schools committee are preparing puzzles, word searches, power point presentations and games to be played during school. Each day one member of the committee will read out a word or fact associated with the environment. Ms. Dunphy is preparing a presentation of the harmful effects of littering on wildlife. Ms. Horn and the green schools committee would like to thank the students and staff for their help over the past year. With your continuing support we are optimistic of achieving our first green flag.
