Rathangan Raptures out to impress.
On Thursday the 9th of October our cadet and senior ladies basket ball teams travelled down to Cork for their cup matches both of which were scheduled for 1pm Thursday and Friday.  The journey on the train from Portarlington to Cork was long but enjoyable. Our first match was against the skilfully endowed girls of Gleann Maghair.
The game began with great intensity and eagerness from both sides. Each team portrayed a great skill and hunger for the ball. The Cork team caught the Rathangan girls quite a few times with their fast breaks and swift movement of the ball . They managed to hit some three pointers and excellent baskets. Our girls also showed their great drive for the game and some rebounds were securely taken by Claire Melia and then passed down the court to find Holly Dunne and May O'brien who skillfully placed the ball in the net. Rathangan worked extemely hard in defence but Cork continued to fight hard for a score and were on their toes at all times.
At half time Cork took the lead with a score line of Rathangan -18 Cork-25. The  Rathangan girls needed to progress their game in the second half but they continued to feel the pressure from the Cork defence. After a foul from the cork side the Raptors were awarded 2 free shots but their  ball failed to make its way to the basket . As the final few minutes of the game loomed the Raptors never gave up . They put continuous pressure on the Cork girls. The raptors battled endlessly but could not seem to steal the ball from the cork side despite their amazing efforts.  When the final whistle blew the score read Cork-46 Rathangan-33. After a long tough day the girls returned to the beautiful Montenotte hotel where they enjoyed an evening full of leisure in the swimming pool, jacuzzi and gym. After a relaxing evening the girls then appreciated a delicious meal together and a movie night to finish off . The following morning the girls transformed back into game mode as a tough cadet match lay ahead against 'King Cork.'
The Raptures were very successful in this game receiving a score line of Rathangan-31 Cork-23. Throughout the game the girls showed great determination and commitment. They worked unstoppably in defence and cunningly in offence. Some well-earned scores came about after the girls worked the ball swiftly up the court.  When the final whistle sounded the girls were delighted with their victory.  That evening the girls traveled back to  Kildare on the train. Overall it was a fantastic weekend . Great thanks to their coaches Ms. Ashe and Ms.Conway and to all the players who continued to show their great efforts.
